Obituary for Glenn W Van Leer

Glenn Walter Van Leer, age 84, of Union passed away Friday, November 17, 2017 in St. Clare Hospital. Glenn was born September 3, 1933 in Beaufort, MO. He is the son of the late Walter Van Leer and his wife Viola nee` Doerr. Glenn received his education in Union and graduated from Union High School in 1951. He was united in marriage to Dixie Schaefferkoetter December 19, 1954 at the Zion United Church of Christ in Union; the couple made their home in Union, MO. Glenn served his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He was employed as an electrician with Van Leer Electric and he retired in 1998. Glenn served as an alderman for the City of Union from 1977 to 1985. In 1985 he became the Mayor of Union, an office he held until 2007. In addition to his involvement as a civic leader he was also an avid volunteer for the community. He was a member of the American Legion Post #297, the Masonic Lodge and Union Development Corporation. He and his wife Dixie were supporters of the Franklin County Developmental Services, Dixie having been a founding member of the organization. Glenn was also involved with the Union Girls Softball Association, where he coached for many years. For all his efforts for the community he received several awards. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1988, in 2001 he received the Long-Haul Service Award and in 2007 he received the Missouri Municipal Award. In addition to all his dedication to the community he was a dedicated family man, his favorite roles were being a father and grandfather to his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie Van Leer, February 26, 2017.
He is survived by three daughters, Pam Klenke and husband Hank of Beaufort, MO, Cindy Groenke and husband Dale of Beaufort, MO and Marcy Van Leer of Union, MO; one brother, Marvin “Beef” Van Leer and wife Virginia of Beaufort, MO; one sister Helen Olm of Toronto, KS; four grandchildren, Laura and Aaron Borgmann, Megan and Nathan Isgriggs, Jenna and Matt Galbreath, Ross and Faith Groenke; four great-grandchildren, Chase and Ava Borgmann, Lincoln Isgriggs, Halle Galbreath; two sisters-in-law, Linda Metcalf and husband Jim and Kay Nuernberger and husband Chuck both of Union, MO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:00 am at Zion United Church Of Christ in Union, MO with Rev. Mike Bone officiating. Burial followed in Zion UCC in Union, MO on Tuesday, November 21 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to American Legion Post #297 or Developmental Services of Franklin County. The Van Leer family was served by the Oltmann Funeral Home in Union, MO.
