Obituary for George James Wingbermuehle

George James Wingbermuehle was born July 10, 1948 in St. Louis; son of the late Raymond Wingbermuehle and wife, Catherine Dalton Wingbermuehle. He passed away Monday, July 9, 2018 in Washington, Missouri at the age of 69 years and 364 days.
George received his education at St. Pius V Elementary School in St. Louis and graduated from Augustinian Academy all boys school in 1966. He then went on to South East Missouri State University (SEMO) in Cape Girardeau and achieved his Bachelors’ degree in secondary education. As a senior, George did his student teaching at St. Francis Borgia High School in downtown Washington under the late teacher, Joe Kaiser. Upon graduation in 1971, George was hired as a teacher at St. Francis Borgia High School for the 1971-72 school year. He then achieved his Masters’ degree in secondary education administration from St. Louis University in St. Louis.
On October 17, 1980, George was united in marriage to Elaine Brinker at Sacred Heart Church in Eureka and one son was born to this marriage. In 1981, George was hired as principal at St. John the Baptist High School in South St. Louis and was there until 1995. George then came back to S.F.B.R.H.S. in the 1995-96 school year as the new principal and later would become the president of the high school. George retired from what he referred to as his “dream job” in 2015.
Under his leadership, the school grew and expanded in size to what it has become today: a regional leader in Catholic High School education all while utilizing the lowest tuition in the area. “Mr.Wing,” as he was affectionately known, received the prestigious Distinguished Knight Award for his dedication and leadership through the years. In receiving the award, he was referred to as a “skillful and fearless leader, as well as a man of great character” and “a true visionary who has moved the school forward.”
George was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and the Knights of Columbus. In his younger days, George enjoyed spelunking, and more recently, fishing, boating, and bowling; even teaching a bowling class until retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Wingbermuehle of Washington; one son, Joseph Wingbermuehle and partner, Ryan Richt of St. Louis; five siblings, Eileen Winter of St. Louis, Raymond Wingbermuehle and wife, Denise of Springfield, IL, William Wingbermuehle and wife, Pat, James Wingbermuehle and wife, Jody and Jerome Wingbermuehle and wife, Linda all of St. Louis; four siblings-in-law, Judy Lammers and husband, Don of Richmond, TX, Donna Wildt and husband, Emil of Washington, Rich Brinker and wife, Janie of Washington, and Marvin Brinker and wife, Karen of St. Charles; his BORGIA family; other relatives; and many friends.

Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Washington with Rev. Kevin Schmittgens officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Borgia Cemetery. Memorials preferred to S.F.B.R.H.S. or Melanoma Research Foundation. The family was served by the Oltmann Funeral Home in Washington.
